In 2009 when I bought the house, it was my first and I had no sense of the joy and memories with family and friends it would bring. I wanted a place that was an easy commute to UW and downtown, yet was safe and quietly out of the city. I needed a big yard, for friends and family to grow.
The house was structurally in great shape when I purchased it, although it needed cosmetic updates. That is exactly what I wanted - space and opportunity to get my hands dirty. On the day I got the keys, I went into the back yard and began the process of reclaiming a jungle of overgrowth and turning it into something we could enjoy peacefully. Since then, I’ve landscaped the property, adding 5 apple trees, a peach tree, a plum tree (3 varieties grafted), raspberries, bulbs, Japanese maples, rhodies (some rare species varieties), hydrangeas, weeping cherry, and countless other plants. Nearly every weekend was a new project inside or outside.
The location has been wonderful. It’s just a quick walk to the post office, Safeway, bakeries, coffee shops, and bus lines to UW and downtown. At the same time, it is quiet and doesn’t feel like I am just steps to the city.
I’ll miss the friendly neighbors, walking the dog, eating fresh plums, and spending time with friends and family at the firepit in the patio out back. I hope whoever comes next will fill the place with the love that we did for so many years.
